Vaginal Mesh Complications: Treatment of Shortened Vagina

A rare complication of prolapse surgery can be a shortened vagina. This can result in painful intercourse or the inability to have intercourse because of the vaginal shortening. This can result after hysterectomy and/or prolapse surgery, such as Anterior and Posterior repair with or without mesh. If this happens a conservative approach with attempts at vaginal dilators can be attempted (ie stretching out the vagina or attempting to create more length with the use of vaginal dilators). If this is not successful then a surgical approach will be necessary. This is one of the most complex and difficult surgeries a pelvic surgeon faces. Many different surgeries have been described and attempted but most do not have very good success. Drs. Moore and Miklos utilize a laparoscopic modification of the Davydov procedure that they first learned in Russia years ago. This is the least invasive procedure to obtain a neovagina or increased vaginal length and has excellent long term cure rates. Drs. Miklos’ and Moore’s Laparoscopic Center in Atlanta is one of the only Center’s in the US to offer this procedure. For more information on shortened vagina after surgery please see their dedicated website to this problem (www.neovaginasurgeons.com).
